Labour ‘broadband tax’ to hit three million offline homes

Plans by Labour to introduce a ‘broadband tax’ will affect three million households who have no intention of using the internet.

The tax unveiled last year by Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, is designed to raise £175 million to fund super-fast broadband across the country.

Every house in Britain with a fixed-line phone – an estimated 23 million homes – will be charged an extra six pounds per year on their tax bill to pay for the plans.

But the Conservative Party said the tax will force more than 3.2 million households, including pensioners, to pay for a service they do not use and have no interest in signing up for.
